Didgeridoo

My favourite place on earth? Australia!

The laid-back people, the wines, the food, the different climates, the sea, the sun, the Northern territory, the Blue Mountains, the rainforest, and of course the outback… I love it all!

I’m also a big fan of aboriginal art and wanted to make a painting that would take you straight away to the back of Bourke!

Cappuccino

My wake-up-ritual on holiday in Tuscany: Give me a plastic chair and shaky table under the blinds of a coffee shop, a sfogliatella (a sweet pastry) and a cappuccino. I watch the locals greeting each other. The bright sun overexposes the old market square, swallows swoop through the azzurro sky. The silence is violently scattered by the sound of a million cicadas. Occasionally a rickety Fiat or Vespa passes by. The heat can only be tolerated by moving as little as possible. I order another cappuccino through the window, circling my finger and pointing at my cup with a sincere smile. The friendly barista behind the counter gives me a nod. According to the Italians, it is an absolute crime to drink cappuccino after eleven o’clock.

A) It’s too hot to wear a watch.
B) Last time I checked, I was no Italian

Bisoux blanc

It was summer in the south of France. We just visited the vineyards and its friendly owners of Bisoux vins. We tasted their lovely new wines and drove somewhat tipsy towards the salt fields of Salin de Giraud. The vines gave way to floodplains where the Camargue horses ran in the afternoon sun. We drove up a dirt track. Ten minutes later the road was paved with deep potholes. On the left and right of the track, white salt lagunes appeared. The sun and blue sky completed the fabulous summer panorama. Finally, we reached the lovely and quiet Beauduc plage. It was time for a refreshing dip in the Mediterranean sea and a delicious glass of cold Bisoux blanc!

Grappa!

We celebrated the second anniversary of our cooking club on the Westcoast of Italy. The last night of our trip, we booked the upper terrace of a restaurant at the harbour of Piombino, overlooking the romantically lit island of Elba, the first plates of divine crustaciousness were placed on the tables. It would be the first of a total of nine courses. Familiar with the heavy Italian dinners I ordered a grappa after every course. Grappa you see, is besides a very delicious drink Italian for ‘sewer unblocker’. So, if you want to make it to your dessert, grab a grappa to avoid an exploding stomach and/or clogged intestines. Another positive side effect: it makes you forget how you got back with nine ragazzi in one taxi. Tanti auguri!

Vespa é Bellezza

My favourite design must be that of the Italian Vespa scooter, manufactured by Piaggio.
Its simple design which was patented in 1946, its beautiful shapes and colouring, the small wheels and the chrome details.
This piece of postwar design brings you everywhere. To the beach, up the old Italian hills and to your favourite pub or ristorante.
Simple, easy to handle and a design icon since 1946. Check out the lovely Vespa museum in Pontedera, near Pisa where the first Vespa (Italian for Wasp) was assembled by Piaggio & Co. S.p.A.
